Fermoy Montessori School was established in 1971. Having worked in the primary school sector, Norma Greehy, the founder of the Fermoy Montessori School recognised the need for pre-school education for younger children to prepare them for the primary school setting. Norma studied Montessori with St. Nicholas College London. Dr. Maria Montessori gave permission to two English ladies, Margaret Homfray and Isobel Child to establish a training college in London. Before opening her doors in 1971, Ms. Homfray and Ms. Child met with Norma Greehy and assisted her in establishing her school. The school opened in October 1971 in the front room of a house on Thomas Street, Fermoy with just five children. The school has been going from strength to strength since then. The school is now situated in Green Hill, Fermoy, attached to Norma’s home and maintaining the home from home environment and individual attention that is the cornerstone of Norma’s vision in 1971.
Ida Greehy B.A., M.Ed. is now the proprietor of the Fermoy Montessori School, with over 19 years experience of working with children. After completing a B.A. in Philosophy and Theology, Ida was given the opportunity to take up a position in the school. She completed a B.A. in Montessori and Humanities and subsequently a Masters in Education. Ida also lectures to B.A. Honours level in Montessori Education and Early Years Education.
